  • Red gel icing color
  • 2 1/4 cups unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 8 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 1 cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 57 tbsp water or cream (for frosting)
  • 1/4 tsp salt (for frosting)
  • Black gel icing color (for frosting)
  • 4 oz red Wilton candy melts (for decoration)
  • 2 tbsp heavy whipping cream (for decoration)
  • Sprinkles (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round baking pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat together butter, vegetable oil, and sugar until fluffy. Add vanilla extract.
  4. Incorporate eggs one at a time. Gradually mix in the buttermilk.
  5. Melt chocolate and cool slightly before adding to the batter.
  6. Divide the batter into two bowls; tint one with black gel icing color and the other with red.
  7. Pour alternating spoonfuls of each batter into the prepared pans for a marbled effect.
  8. Bake for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.
